Weerts The ATLAS experiment at the LHC has measured the centrality dependence of charged particle pseudorapidity distributions over |η| < 2 in lead–lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of √ sNN = 2.76 TeV. In order to include particles with transverse momentum as low as 30 MeV, the data were recorded with the central solenoid magnet off. Charged particles were reconstructed with two algorithms (2-point “tracklets” and full tracks) using information from the pixel detector only. The lead–lead collision centrality was characterized by the total transverse energy in the forward calorimeter in the range 3.2 < |η| < 4.9. Measurements are presented of the per-event charged particle pseudorapidity distribution, dNch/dη, and the average charged particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.5 in several intervals of collision centrality. The results are compared to previous midrapidity measurements at the LHC and RHIC. The variation of the mid-rapidity charged particle yield per colliding nucleon pair with the number of participants is consistent with lower √ sNN results. The shape of the dNch/dη distribution is found to be independent of centrality within the systematic uncertainties of the measurement. © 2012 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

متن کاملMeasurements of charged particle spectra and nuclear modification factor in p+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector
The ATLAS detector at the LHC obtained the sample of p+Pb data at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV with integrated luminosity of 25 nb−1, which can be compared to the pp data obtained by interpolating pp measurements at √ s = 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV. Due to the excellent capabilities of the ATLAS detector, and its stable operation in heavy ion as well as proton–proton physics runs, the data allow measurements of th...
متن کاملCharged particle production in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at ALICE
Global event observables are of fundamental importance in characterizing the properties of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE experiment at LHC measured charged particle multiplicity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV in a wide pseudo-rapidity range (−5 < η < 5.5) exploiting different techniques. The production of high transverse moment...
متن کاملlead-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Differential measurements of charged particle azimuthal anisotropy are presented for lead-lead collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of approximately 8 μb−1. This anisotropy is characterized via a Fourier expansion of the distribution of charged particles in azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, with the coefficients vn de...
